PADMASANA TT

Celebrating Eleven Years of Teacher Training
Twenty-one Years of Teaching Yoga
Twenty-six Years of Practicing Yoga

ALISON WEST will lead the widely acclaimed YOGA UNION
® TEACHER TRAINING for qualified applicants. The goal of these unique,
powerful Teacher Trainings, which are the model for many of the urban TT's and intensives now taking place, is to give you a thorough
foundation for outstanding teaching, while allowing you to discover your personal direction as a teacher and as a person.  Explore the full
scope of yoga as a practical, philosophical and spiritual practice.

Alison West's high-wattage TT offers a systematic approach to the practice of asana and pranayama with a grounding in the philosophical
tradition of Classical Yoga and an introduction to anatomy both physical and subtle (nadis, chakras, the koshas), ensuring a sound and
meaningful practice. You will focus on the immediate importance of asana and pranayama without forgetting the ultimate goal of the
practice--union, in a way meaningful to you.

The YU TT's limit numbers very seriously, guaranteeing that participants get individual attention and plenty of teaching practice so that you
can effectively teach a class by the end of the TT with an ability to observe and adjust your students.  Even if teaching is not in your plans,
your own practice will go through marked transformation in the process of learning to teach others.

Teacher Certification is dependent upon completion of all requirements.

Each day includes an asana practice, class instruction in the subjects listed below and teaching practice.

PROGRAM
o Fundamentals of a sound Asana Practice and Principles of Action and Alignment
o Principles of Safe, Ethical Teaching, Observation and Adjustments
o Fundamentals of Pranayama
o The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Yoga philosophy and discussion
o Fundamentals of Anatomy (including scoliosis, pregnancy, menstruation) and Subtle Anatomy (Chakras, Nadis, Koshas, Shariras)
o Fundamentals of Kinesiology
o Fundamentals of Yoga for Pregnancy and Menstruation with Bobby Clennell
o Fundamentals of Restorative Yoga with Robin Thorpe and Brette Popper
o Fundamentals of Yoga for Backcare and Scoliosis with Deborah Wolk, co-director of the Yoga Union Center for Backcare & Scolisos
o Two-day Sanskrit immersion with Leslie Freyberg of the American Sanskrit Institute
o Fundamentals of Meditation with Sharon Salzberg, who writes:

"The practice of metta (lovingkindness), uncovering the force of love that can uproot fear, anger, and guilt, begins with befriending
ourselves. The foundation of metta practice is to know how to be our own friend. According to the Buddha,
'You can search throughout the entire universe for someone who is more deserving of your love and affection than
you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere. You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe,
deserve your love and affection.' How few of us embrace ourselves in this way! With metta practice we uncover the
possibility of truly respecting ourselves."--Sharon Salzberg, Lovingkindness, From Everyday Mind, a Tricycle book edited by Jean Smith

What you can expect:
• You will come away with the ability to teach a solid basic class, with language and adjustments suitable to that level,
   including a flowing Surya Namaskar.
• You will study the anatomy and kinesiology that will help you with your understanding of the poses.
• You will have an understanding of one of the central texts of Yoga, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and also of Sanskrit and mantras.
• You will deepen your own practice through class and observation.
• You will get to know and study with some of the best teachers in America

YOGA UNION
® 300 TT
2010-2011

PADMASANA 300TT

September ____@ Home Study period
Friday-Sunday, September____ Start of 300-Hour Program

Application deadline: September __
Class audition (or video) deadline: September ___
DATES TO NE ANNOUNCED
The Yoga Union 300TT continues the "Gold Standard" (TONY 2007) quality of its 200TT in its equally rich and demanding 300-hour, nine-month program, providing you with the opportunity not only to become outstanding teachers at the intermediate+ level, but to maintain a serious self-practice in asana, pranayama and meditation. You will also discover the world of ancient yoga texts and of ancient practices such as yantra painting and mantra chanting, all in the service of helping you to find your path and help others to find theirs.  The engaging, rigorous curriculum is presented by a seasoned faculty.  Excellence, integrity, hard work, inspiration-these are some of the qualities you can expect from the YU 300TT.  And because of the limited group size, you will receive abundant personal attention and have the opportunity to develop a real Satsang with your fellow students.

In addition to the well-rounded program described below, you will be certified in Yoga for Basic Backcare, Basic Yoga for Anxiety and Depression, and Level One Wall-Rope Certification, allowing you to safely and effectively use wall-ropes at YU and other studios where they are available to you.

You can expect to achieve new clarity and confidence in both your teaching and practice, while assimilating a substantial body of information on which to draw, both in and out of the studio.

STUDYING AND TEACHING AMEN IN HANDSTANDSANA
Practice and teach at a new level. Yoga Union's trademark emphasis on teaching practice during the program will help you to perfect your observation, verbal, physical and tonal expression, pacing, sequencing and suitable modifications. You will learn the principles of sequencing governing the major forms of Yoga today to lay the foundation for a broad understanding of ancient  and modern Yoga, while honing your own ability to sequence meaningfully and appropriately.  Perfecting your knowledge of alignment will help you in whatever form of Yoga you teach.

ANATOMY
Delve more deeply into the body's systems (nerves, muscle, bones, organs) so that you can have a more secure sense of how the body moves and functions.  Kinesiology is more demanding than anatomy, and understanding the challenges the body and mind face when working in the poses is fundamental in developing your own sense of sequencing, avoiding injury and approaching more challenging poses.

CHAKRAS, YANTRAS AND MANTRAS
Awaken your whole being by studying in greater depth the subtle anatomy of the body, chanting, mantras and yantras, and how they affect us.  There is nothing that does not vibrate in the manifest cosmos.

MEDITATION
Still your mind under the guidance of Sharon Salzberg, a veritable "national treasure," in the words of one long-time practitioner.  Sharon Salzberg will oversee your meditation practice on a regular basis during the intensive, offering several three-hour lectures and discussion.  In the meantime, a buddy system will help you maintain a regular practice during the time of the 300TT and lay the foundation for a lifetime of meditation.  If you already have a meditation practice, this will be the perfect time to receive sustained guidance. (Note: hours outside of the weekend hours will be necessary for this, as Sharon's weekend scheduling is very heavy).

PHILOSOPHY
Explore new texts, such as Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Shiva Samhita, Gheranda Samhita, and other texts assigned during the 300TT.  This is a wonderful opportunity to read texts you might not otherwise find the time for and to share your experience of them in the company of interested colleagues.  It is essential that you have previously read the Yoga Sutras of Master Patanjali (Light on the Yoga Sutra, B. K.S. Iyengar). If that's not the case, this would be the right to start.  Dr Somadeva Vasudev of Columbia University will lecture on the history of Yoga and the place of these texts in the context of the evolution of thought and spiritual practice in India.

BEYOND
With the YU 300TT, you will be ready to safely teach at the intermediate+ level anywhere.  YU strives to develop teachers who can be hired with confidence by any center looking for a well-rounded, confident, sensitive teacher. This program will also prepare you for the 300YTT (or Yoga Therapy Training) beginning in 2010. The personal mentoring of senior teachers will provide you with a solid point of reference while you continue to forge your personal trajectory in Yoga.

Yoga Union TT Recognition
YU is recognized by Yoga Alliance at the 200 & 500 level.  But more importantly, it is recognized by its peers as one of the leading Teacher Training institutions in America ("Gold Standard," TONY 2007)
