Jaki Nett,Senior Iyengar teacher from Napa Valley California

For 15 years, Jaki Nett has discreetly studied the pelvic floor muscles and the dysfunctions that can occur when these muscles become compromised and weaken.  Spurred on by her own personal need, Jaki developed a holistic approach that allowed strength and control to return to her muscles, and now she shares this knowledge with other women and men. Her system the Felt Sense Method® draws from her three learned modalities, yoga asana, anatomy and psychology.

The pelvic floor muscles are muscles of support. In this workshop we will explore the basic role of the pelvic floor muscles and experience how they can sustain us while practicing yoga. The precepts of the Felt Sense Method will also be intertwined throughout the workshop.

For Yoga Teachers & for students with scoliosis and/or back problems

From the practice room to the medical class a visit to Pune reveals not only the techniques shared by the Iyengars in general classes but those used by Iyengar teachers throughout the world. In the second installment of this workshop, Deborah will continue to share prop adjustments she observed and practiced while in Pune specific to scoliosis as well as other back issues such as hip problems, sacroiliac dysfunction, hyperlordosis and hyperkyphosis, cervical problems etc.  There will be a specific emphasis on ways to practice standing poses and inversions. These adjustments will be particularly enlightening for teachers but will also be helpful to students of all levels with scoliosis and other back issues.

Yoga & Scoliosis:  Alignment as Enlightenment

It's easy to say to anyone with a chronic condition that the way to improve oneself is to get a better body!

  • For students with scoliosis, the basics of Iyengar Yoga will improve posture, induce deeper breathing, elongate, de-rotate, and reduce the lateral curves in their spine  But that is just the beginning. The next step is to experience a new internal representation of how their body feels and works.
  • Students with spinal fusions will learn how to re-educate themselves about their trunk, spine, skull, and limbs and what to do to stay safe when practicing asanas.
  • Poses that activate the vestibular and oculomotor systems will be explained, demonstrated, instructed, and corrected to show how the ears and eyes affect postural balance.
  • Finally, pranayama instruction will be given to guide the breath into areas that are normally cut off from the free flow of prana.
By reversing gravity's drag through traction and the creative use of props, yoga brings new life and increased awareness to our total anatomy.

And the really good news: Yoga's gospel of deep relaxation is the best way to deal with the stress that comes from living with any chronic condition. Expect a innovative variety of standing poses, twists, inversions, and restorative postures.
